Paul A. Foerster

Paul A. Foerster enjoyed teaching mathematics at Alamo Heights High School in San Antonio, Texas, from 1961 to 2011. He holds a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering, a master’s degree in mathematics, and an honorary doctorate in humane letters. His experience as an Engineering Duty Officer in the Navy from 1957 to 1961, with the design, manufacture, and testing of nuclear submarines, taught him the importance of understanding basic theory if you are to make intelligent applications of mathematics. As a teacher, he wrote problems that led his students to acquire this concept. The problems and supporting narrative now appear in his five textbooks—Algebra 1 through Calculus. Paul was the Texas recipient of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics Teaching in 1983, the first year of the award. In retirement, he remains active in mathematics education through presentations at national meetings, writing, and sharing teaching materials electronically with teachers around the world. He raised three children with the late Jo Ann
Foerster, has two stepchildren through his wife Peggy Foerster (all five children now married), seven grandchildren, and one great-grandson.
