IM® v. 360 K-8 Leaders: Observing a Problem-Based Classroom

Join Kendall Hunt and Illustrative Mathematics for a special virtual professional learning opportunity designed just for school leaders and math coaches. Led by IM Certified® trainers, this session welcomes leaders implementing IM® K–5 Math who observe classrooms and support teacher learning.

While examples will focus on grades K–5, leaders working in grades 6–8 are encouraged to join and will find the experience valuable.

Participants will examine what effective problem based learning looks and sounds like in practice, with a focus on student learning behaviors, the teacher moves that shape them, and the connections between the two. Time is built in for reflection on how to better support teacher growth. Participants will leave with a clearer understanding of problem based teaching and learning, the ability to recognize observable student actions, and insight into how intentional teacher moves influence those outcomes.

This event will be limited to the first 25 attendees who sign up. After that, additional sign-ups will be added to a wait list in case any of the initial 25 attendees cannot attend. There is a minimum of 10 registrations to run the event. If the minimum is not met, the event will be canceled. We will communicate with you if you have been added to the wait list or if there has been any cancelations.

Observing a Problem-Based Classroom Overview

Timing (est.)

Introduction

Review the agenda and learning goals, learning experience tools, and share the IM story.

15 mins

Observable Student
Actions in a Problem-Based Classroom
Consider observable look-fors for students and teachers in a problem-based lesson. Experience the Estimation Exploration? routine from a student lens and watch a video to observe teacher moves that make student thinking visible and allow students to listen to and respond to each other’s ideas.

50 mins

Intentional Teacher Moves
in a Problem-Based
Classroom
Engage in doing mathematics together in order to identify the teacher moves and student look-fors that occur during problem-based learning. Explore a class vignette to identify the teacher moves and student look-fors that occur during problem-based learning.
