IMKH California, an IM® v.360 math curriculum, is problem-based and builds strong classroom math communities. It gives students a clear progression of concepts and helps teachers deepen their understanding of math and student thinking.
The curriculum encourages collaboration and meaningful mathematical conversations, highlighting Big Ideas, Major Concepts, and Mathematical Practices, while integrating Environmental Principles & Concepts and supports for MLL, ELD, and EL students.
Grade 8
The big ideas in Grade 8 include transformational geometry, studying rigid transformations, congruence, dilations, and similarity, and using these concepts to understand slope in the coordinate plane. Students extend their work with proportional relationships to linear relationships, representing them with equations, tables, and graphs, solving equations in one and two variables, and analyzing systems of equations. They explore functions, apply linear relationships to data with variability, and deepen their understanding of exponents, including all integers, orders of magnitude, and scientific notation. Students also encounter irrational numbers and extend the rational-number system to the real numbers, often through work with the Pythagorean Theorem. An optional final unit offers opportunities to integrate and apply these ideas in real-world and mathematical contexts.
Teacher Guide Set: This purchase includes a set of 3 coil-bound guides (Units 1-3, 4-6, 7-9), a set of 3 shrink-wrapped Teacher Resource Copy Masters (Units 1-3, 4-6, 7-9), and the Teacher Resource Guide.
The Grade 8 curriculum is partitioned into 9 units:
- Rigid Transformations and Congruence
- Dilations, Similarity, and Introducing Slope
- Linear Relationships
- Linear Equations and Linear Systems
- Functions and Volume
- Associations in Data
- Exponents and Scientific Notation
- Pythagorean Theorem and Irrational Numbers
- Putting It All Together
