OVERVIEW

Problem Strings were originally created as an ancillary for Kendall Hunt’s textbooks Discovering Algebra and Discovering Advanced Algebra, but they can be used with any math curriculum. They are mini lessons written by Pamela Weber Harris designed to make sense of the important skills learned in algebra and advanced algebra. Each mini lesson consists of a string of purposefully related problems, designed to help students construct mathematical relationships. Teachers and students work together to make these important mathematical connections.

The problem strings can be used before, during and/or after the lessons and investigations. They are written to aid teachers in previewing big ideas and skills that will arise in an investigation, and solidifying the ideas and skills that come up in the investigation. This new ancillary is a helpful tool for those students who struggle to solve the challenging problems due to lack of foundational understanding of the algebra skills.
